Introducing Nepenthes kampotiana

My friend Philip Green asked me to post some pictures of Nepenthes kampotiana, a species whose name has been around for quite a long time.
But although some serious research has been carried out lately on the Indochinese Nepenthes taxa, there are some points that still need to be cleared within this group. After the publication of a definitive account on Nepenthes thorelii later this year, we will publish next year a paper that will clearly define the relation between Nepenthes kampotiana and the other Nepenthes of the N. thorelii aggregate (this aggregate refers to all the thorelii like species).
N. kampotiana had been described from material collected from the Kampot province in Cambodia by a botanist called Geoffray. Although Thai populations of this poorly known taxon has been studied by Marcello Catalano, our 2011 trip is the first time since its description in 1909 that Nepenthes kampotiana has been documented by qualified botanists in Cambodia.
This species is currently common in western Cambodia and I don't think it is threatened in the near future.
Nepenthes kampotiana is highly variable and further taxonomic works and decisions need to be done - what we intend to do in our forthcoming paper.

Hope you like those pictures, Phil! More to come when we publish our taxonomic account ;-)

  1. Yep, sure do :-)
I see what you mean about variable.
    Thanks.

  2. An upcoming paper on this species is something worth looking forward too, and I would like that 'variable' bit to be expounded on. The species in the thorelii aggregate look similar to one another save for some nifty details, and I'd like to know if N. kampotiana exhibit variations that overlap those from the other species.
