The unmistakable Macracantha arcuata

I have observed many interesting spiders in the course of my various field trips in Borneo. One of the highlights was arguably the Curved Long-Spined Spider, Macracantha arcuata. This outstanding species was formerly included in the well known genus Gasteracantha that hosts some other amazing spiders.

Macracantha arcuata has a short body that barely excesses 10 mm long. It is found in the shady fringes of secondary and primary forests. This is where I observed the specimen below, in Mulu National Park. Apparently there are several color morphs including a cute white one. However this is the yellow orange morph I am more familiar with as I have already met with this spider on a few occasions on my past trips in tropical Asia. I clearly hope to see more of them in the following years. :-)
